The problem we started with
Organized fishing competition in North America has two doors, and most anglers can walk through neither. The first is a real tournament circuit: a boat, a truck to pull it, entry fees, travel, and a schedule built around being at a specific ramp at a specific hour. The second is an informal contest among friends, which runs on the honor system and therefore runs on nothing — a photo of a fish held toward the camera proves absolutely nothing about how long it was.
Meanwhile the actual population of anglers is enormous, distributed across every state and province, mostly fishing from banks, kayaks, jon boats and waders, on their own schedule, for a few hours at a time. There was no way for those people to compete against each other in any way that meant something.
What we built
Fish Masters Live is an attempt to make a fishing tournament work the way the rest of modern life works: asynchronously, from your phone, wherever you happen to be.
The technical core is measurement. If a phone can measure a fish accurately from a photo of the actual scene — not from a number the angler types in — then a leaderboard built on photos becomes defensible. Add on-device species recognition so a claimed species has something behind it, make every submission visible to everyone else in the tournament, and add a moderation layer with an append-only audit trail, and you have something that is honest enough to compete on.
The rest follows from that. Weekly tournaments so there is always one running. Slams and series and elimination brackets so there is variety. Custom tournaments with map boundaries so a group of friends on one lake can run their own thing. Records, seasonal leaderboards, XP ranks and achievement badges so there is a reason to keep logging fish after the week ends.
Why length, not weight
Scoring on length rather than weight is the decision that makes everything else possible. Weight demands a scale, which demands a boat or a bag, which demands keeping the fish out of the water. Length can be read from an image, and a fish laid on a wet mat is back in the water in under fifteen seconds.
It also means no livewells, no dead fish at a weigh-in, and no reason for a competitive angler to ever transport a fish anywhere. Every tournament on Fish Masters Live is catch, measure, release, by construction rather than by rule.
Where we are
Fish Masters Live is available on iOS today, with 25 species recognized on-device and tournaments running across all 50 states and Canada. An Android version is in development. We add species based on what anglers ask for — there is a request form inside the app, and the list is genuinely how we prioritize.
Who we are
Fish Masters Live is built and operated by Digital Fish Solutions LLC, a small independent company. We are not part of a tackle brand, a media group or a tournament circuit. We do not sell your data, and there is no advertising in the app.
The app is free to download and free to compete in. Optional subscription tiers unlock a full personal fishing log, weather data on every catch, custom tournament creation, fishing detail tracking and an XP multiplier. Those are sold only through the App Store — we deliberately do not sell subscriptions on this website.
